Men's Track & Field Place Third At Horizon League Championships
May 9, 2008 Youngstown, Ohio - The UIC men's track and field team concluded competition with a third place finish at the Horizon League Championships on Friday afternoon. UIC finished with 74 combined points. Host Youngstown State (169) took second and Milwaukee (183) won the men's championship. After capturing the decathlon title last weekend, Mike Savegnago continued to impress as he defended his pole vault title in stellar fashion. The junior broke the school record, league championship record, and met the NCAA provisional mark with a height of 4.90 meters. He also recorded a third-place finish in the high jump with a career-best leap of 2.00 meters. Terell Williams showed why he was the league leader in the javelin throw. The senior won his second consecutive javelin crown with a toss of 53.30 meters. He also posted a third-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 4.60 meters. Veteran Joseph Mbari fared well in the distance events. The senior placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a career-best time of 14:53.24. He also managed to finish ninth in the 1,500-meter run (3:59.99). In the 800-meter finals, Lewis Brown and Steve Royal turned in solid performances for the Flames. Brown crossed the finish line in fifth-place (1:54.45) and Royal in sixth (1:56.28). Cory Renner also placed eighth in the 100-meter finals with a time of 11.60 seconds. Idara Essien, Sarah Welch, and Kristin Scolarici highlighted the UIC women's track and field team, who placed eighth overall.
Essien posted a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (11.86m) while Welch finished fifth in the pole vault (2.95m). In the 5,000-meter run, Scolarici turned in a time of 18:35.52, respectively. |
